At the start of June I started Handstiched Camp The class focuses on 5 hand stitching techniques and there is a week of lesson followed by a week of space. We are currently on the space following week 3 and I’m just getting around to posting about week 1.
Each week one of the projects adds to a quilt, in addition there are 2-3 other, smaller, projects. I decided I could not do them all so I would focus on the quilt. I was so diligent. I started right away and I even had my reverse applique medallion (the quilt center) done by the end of the week 1 space. But then I HATED it.
Here it is before I added the borders (which only made things worse – hence no photo):
Firstly I cut the solid 1 inch too small all around, so I was working with that limitation. I ended up not being happy with the quality of my reverse applique at all, the points were a mess.
After I put the mitered borders on I decided I needed to start again because week 2 was embroidery and there was no way I was spending 20-30 hours embroidering a ring around this center that I was not happy with.
But then I was behind…so I decided to focus on the little projects and do the quilt after, once I had improved some of my skills (since the whole point of the class is for me to learn hand skills).
So in the middle of week 2 I started on a week 1 project. I finished it at the lake over the Canada Day long weekend and here it is:
It’s a little needle book. It’s not perfect but I did improve a lot as I went. I could have picked a better fabric as the print was too large to show through the holes on the front. Here is the inside:
So yeah, things are not going as well as I planned. I’m so behind now I need to decide if I’m going to do a week 2 project or jump into week 3 this week and then go back once the class ends. I’d like to be able to join back up with the class for week 4 and 5 as it’s a lot easier to stay motivated when the posts are fresh, not to mention it’s easier to get help.
I’ll keep you posted!
