A pile of mini quilts!

28 Dec

I think I’ve been bitten by the mini bug, and the swapping bug, and the gifting to friend’s with little ones bug. Basically I just like to make minis. Here are a bunch I made this year that haven’t hit the blog yet.

First up I made this fun one for the Saskatoon MQG mini swap, my lovely friend Tarra was the recipient.

I continued the rainbow theme on the back:

I also made this trio of doll quilts for my friend’s daughters.

For the Little Quilts Swap, based on the book by Sarah Fielke, I made this mini. The quilting is the star of the show:

And finally for the IG mini swap I made this mini using the Raspberry Kiss block tutorial by Wooden Spoon Quilts. My partner liked vintage fabrics which I didn’t have, so I bought some and pushed myself to do something I wouldn’t normally do and I simply loved the result! (Excuse the creases in the photo, it was –30 and the photos just had to get done!).

I’m sure you will see many more minis from me in 2015!

WIP Progress–February 2013

28 Feb

Another month! Between 1 week of holidays and the shorter month it feels like I just did this update. But I actually got quite a bit done this month, looks like this little list is working for me.

Previous WIP update for reference.

1. Skill Builder BOM at Pile O’ Fabric

Still behind, haven’t done a single stitch yet. My thread arrived, so I actually have everything I need, I just haven’t had a chance to get started. And now I’m almost 2 whole months behind. Yikes!

2. Lucky Stars BOM at Don’t Call me Betsy

I am up to date! I showed the practice block last month, but here are my first two official blocks. The new block comes out tomorrow. I’m learning TONS about paper piecing, namely how I’m missing the part of my brain that would make me successful. I have repeated the same errors umpteen times, but practice makes perfect right?

3.  Zig Zag Quilt for Addie

I worked on the quilt math and packed up all my supplies to bring this to my craft group tomorrow night (I hope to get everything cut and all the HSTs marked). By the end of the weekend I hope to have all my HSTs sewn. Maybe I’ll be done by the end of next weekend (and thus by Addie’s birthday!).

4. Madrona Road challenge for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild

Done! I blogged about it earlier this week.

Here she is:

Madrona Road

5. Simply Solids: a modern {bee} at Sew at Home Mommy

I am ahead. The March block instructions were posted weeks ago so I got it done after our trip and blogged about it then.

In terms of my blocks rolling in I am still waiting on one. I plan on adding some of my own but I’m not sure how many yet. Thoughts?

Here it is so far (blocks in no particular order):

February 2013 WIP (2 of 5)

6. Small Private Bee – No progress

7. Postage Stamp Quilt for my nephew – No progress

8. Handstiched Camp Quilt – No progress

9.  Waiting for Spring Block-a-palooza – No progress

10. Patchwork Squared Modern Solids Quilt-a-long – No progress

11. Name tag for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild – No Progress

12. Ugly Fat Quarter Challenge for the SMQG

Done! I made a zipper pouch by Elizabeth Hartman. My first time sewing a zipper. Is it perfect? Heck no! I missed a critical step and didn’t sew the entire length of the top, I only sewed beside the zipper, being my first time I thought that step might come later? Well it didn’t. I missed it. By the time I realized, I had done the gussets on the bag and turned it. So there was no going back. It’s still functional and I might try cleaning it up by hand, but for now it is done. I’m actually pretty pleased with it otherwise so I plan on making another one at some point.

13. do. Good Stitches Charity Bee

Ongoing. I blogged about the February blocks and the March block was just posted a few days ago. I’m not up as quilter until May, so until then just blocks every month.

14. Quilt for baby V (Not me! I got more than a few emails)

I’ve spoken to the mom and we are discussing colours, no other progress, baby is due in August so you’ll be seeing a finish before then.

New Additions

15.  Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild Colour Challenge

We drew crayons out of a toque (we are Canadian, of course). Two crayons plus neutrals, those are the only colours to work with. I got green and yellow. I actually have a good plan for what I’m going to do already, but nothing started yet. And here is a hint, I won’t be using any neutrals.

I’m happy, this month I was able to remove more than I added to my pile, and it was short to boot. Onward!

WIP Progress–January 2013

31 Jan

I’m not sure why I said I would update at the end of February, my intention was always to update at the end of every month. Probably because I started mid-month. Regardless here is my end of January update!

Previous WIP update for reference.

I was sick for 1 week, spent 4 unexpected days on a trip, and spent a lot of time on the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild, so I am pleased with my progress. Here we go!

1. Skill Builder BOM at Pile O’ Fabric

Okay I am behind, as expected. My fabric just arrived this week. My Aurifil colour card also arrived this week so I picked my thread for the QAYG based on the fabric and I’ll order the thread tomorrow. So I am behind, but I should be caught up by the end of February. But here is my fabric stack:

2. Lucky Stars BOM at Don’t Call me Betsy

My Lizzy House Constellations arrived. And I pulled a few other solids. I will likely be adding throughout the year. Here is my stack so far:

I finished the practice block as well. I might turn it into a bag, Carly at Citric Sugar posted a wonderful QAYG tutorial on the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild blog that I want to follow.

Don’t look too closely. It is FAR from perfection, but it is my first paper pieced block. I learned a lot of valuable lessons, like make sure your fabric actually covered the entire area, before you sew with an impossibly short stitch length. I also discovered that life is too short for seam ripping on a practice block.

3.  Zig Zag Quilt for Addie – No progress this month, will I get it done for her birthday? 2 months to find out!

4. Madrona Road challenge for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild

I have until February 24th to complete this. I decided on the lattice quilt from From the Blue Chair. I am about 75% done piecing the blocks. So I just need to finish that, press, trim, top, back, quilt. No big deal.

5. Simply Solids: a modern {bee} at Sew at Home Mommy

I am the queen bee for February and the pattern I picked is Converging Corners. I will wait to see what I get from my bee mates before I do any myself. The base is Kona Snow. This is ongoing all year – so I’m sure you’ll see my quilt coming together and the blocks I’ll be making for others. So far I have received 5 blocks – and they are starting to look so pretty together!

6. Small Private Bee – No progress

7. Postage Stamp Quilt for my nephew – No progress

8. Handstiched Camp Quilt – No progress

9.  Waiting for Spring Block-a-palooza – No progress

10. Patchwork Squared Modern Solids Quilt-a-long – No progress

New Additions

11. Name tag for the Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild

I need a name-tag. I have never made one. My first attempt was an epic fail..so it’s back to the drawing board. Don’t believe me? Here she is:

End of Jan WIP (6 of 10)_thumb[2]

12. Ugly Fat Quarter Challenge for the SMQG

We each brought an ugly fat quarter, threw them in a sack and picked one out. Mine isn’t even that ugly (there were some real peaches in the bunch though, I promise you that). I can make anything I want with it, I have no ideas so far.

End of Jan WIP (8 of 10)_thumb[2]

13. do. Good Stitches Charity Bee

I got my assignment this week. I am hosting one of the circles and am acting a quilter. It’s really important to me that I use my powers for good, not evil, so this will be a priority. I won’t announce any more details until my circle has been apprised of the change, but I will have an update soon!

14. New Baby Quilt

There is going to be a new baby in my life! No more details just yet, but I will be making a quilt in the next 6 months.

February is a challenge. For one it’s a short month, and secondly my family is going to Arizona for a week! We need the warmth after a week of deep freeze (-50 Celsius is no joke people!) so I’m looking forward to it. Anyone have any LQSs to recommend in the Phoenix/Mesa area? I’ll try to hit them up. My focus this month will be catching up in my BOMs and finishing the Madrona Road Challenge.
